Northallerton is the county
town of North Yorkshire, and
houses the County's administrative headquarters. Perhaps from
this you would expect to find a huge sprawling place but nothing
could be further from the truth. Northallerton is a small market
town. It was previously a coaching town where stops were made on
route north and there are fine coaching houses on the main
street. |
Northallerton has a feel of importance and elegance which make
it different to the other market towns. It's also quite different
because it hasn't got a market square, but instead a fine high
street with old coaching houses being the most important
buildings. It has a very up-market tea rooms, Betty's, where you
can taste all manner of Yorkshire delicacies and true Yorkshire
brewed tea in a very civilised and comfortable atmosphere.
