Cottage Holidays, B&B and self catering accommodation. The area comprises of the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors, the Vale of York and the coastal region. Each region has it's own distinct, natural beauty and charm. </p> <p>To the west of the county lie the Yorkshire Dales in the Pennine hills, displaying a patchwork of fields and dry-stone walls. Cottage Holidays, B&B and self catering accommodation. The countryside is breathtaking with many natural features and an abundance of rivers and streams, waterfalls and tarns. The area has become known worldwide through the television series "All Creatures Great and Small" which was based on the books of James Herriot, a local vet. To the west of the Dales rise the "Three Peaks" hills of Penn-y-gent, Ingleborough and Whernside a must for all hill walkers and ramblers. The Dales are part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park - one of only six National Park regions in England.</p> <p>To the east are the North Yorkshire Moors, another area of outstanding natural beauty and also a designated National Park. Heather smothered moors with interspersed dales form the landscape here. The area is steeped in history with many ancient buildings and landmarks to discover. A natural area for sporting pursuits such as gliding, shooting, fishing, cycling, horse riding and, of course, hiking. </p> <p>At the eastern edge of the county is the coast, with spectacular cliffs and sweeping sands. There are towns with narrow winding cobbled streets which have a feel of a bygone age, and also majestic Victorian holiday resorts. </p> <p>Between the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors lies the Vale of York with the ancient city of York itself. There are many attractions and rural market towns in the vale. The region has served as the main route to Scotland from the south of England for centuries. Stories of the famous highwayman, Dick Turpin, originated in the Vale of York.
